About Jacob Riley
Jacob Riley, also known as Jake, made the U.S. Olympic marathon team by finishing second at the 2020 Trials in Atlanta. The achievement came after a long interruption to his racing career. USATF’s biography describes several years affected by Achilles problems, surgery in 2018 and a return in 2019, when he finished as the top American at the Chicago Marathon. His 2:10:02 in Atlanta turned that comeback into an Olympic selection. [1]
Before the marathon, Riley developed as a track runner at Stanford, where he earned a degree in biomechanical engineering and placed third in the NCAA 10,000 meters in 2010. He later pursued mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. At the Tokyo Olympic marathon, held in Sapporo in 2021, he finished 29th in 2:16:26. His career links the collegiate 10,000-meter pathway with the persistence required to return to elite racing after an extended absence. [1][2]
