2028 Olympic Marathon Qualification

The road to Los Angeles involves international qualification and selection by a national team. Here is what the October 2026 reporting means for marathoners and fans.

What are the Olympic marathon qualifying times for 2028?

Both LA28 time standards are pending. The U.S. Trials marks of 2:16:00 and 2:37:00 concern entry to St. Louis. Beijing 2027 World Championships standards also belong to a different competition.

For Trials entry, read our 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying standards.

Three reported qualification routes

  • Time standard: run the eventual entry mark on an eligible course inside the Olympic window.
  • Platinum Label finish: place in the top five at a qualifying Platinum Label marathon during that window; this counts as meeting the standard.
  • World Rankings: earn a place through the filtered Road to LA quota list, subject to the country limit.

The reported target is roughly 40% through standards and equivalent finishes, and 60% through rankings. These are targets: enough standard achievers could leave no ranking places. Marathon Handbook explains the routes.

How many marathon spots are available?

The reported quota is 70 per race, with no more than three athletes per country in each race. Meeting a standard alone may not secure entry. Canadian Running explains the smaller fields.

Qualification dates to follow

  • November 1, 2026: reported Olympic window opening.
  • December 2026: time standards expected after Council approval.
  • March 19, 2028: reported protection of the first 55 places on each filtered quota list.
  • March 25, 2028: U.S. Trials in St. Louis, confirmed by USATF.
  • April 30, 2028: reported Olympic window close; the final 15 places follow the March cutoff.

How can the U.S. unlock three marathon spots?

Three Americans in the protected quota on March 19 would secure three places for that race before the Trials. A country may reportedly transfer an existing place to another athlete with an eligible 2:11:00 (men) or 2:29:00 (women) inside the window. These are reallocation eligibility marks, not Olympic entry standards.

A Trials top-three finisher without an individual qualifying position could potentially receive an existing U.S. place if eligible under international and national selection rules. Reallocation does not create an extra place. The U.S. has not already secured six LA28 spots simply because current runners have strong rankings. Canadian Running discusses the U.S. implications.

Do Boston and downhill marathon times count?

CITIUS MAG reports that Boston offers the Platinum top-five route, but its downhill course prevents using a time for the entry standard or reallocation eligibility. It describes the same time restriction at CIM. Ranking performances can still count with downhill adjustments; measurement and certification rules also apply. Read the reported course requirements.

The Trials have a different course rule. See our Trials standards guide for certification and sanctioning requirements.
